Go left or you're fired (Go Left)

Class III+ rapid on the Payette River Located in Banks, Boise County, Idaho (ID), United States (US)

  • About Go left or you're fired (Go Left):

Go left is the first major Class III rapid on the Upper Main Payette with a well defined horizon line. There is a large rock in the middle with a raft eating hole behind it. Go left of center between that rock and a smaller rock along the bank. After you enter the rapid, watch out for the "new" hole about halfway down the rapid. It's in play between 2,000 and 3,700 cfs. Either punch it, surf it, or skirt it on the right edge of the hole. Caution: the water in this rapid is not as deep as others on the Banks to Beehive stretch. • Class III+

Rapids with moderate, irregular waves which may be difficult to avoid and which can swamp an open canoe. Complex maneuvers in fast current and good boat control in tight passages or around ledges are often required; large waves or strainers may be present but are easily avoided. Strong eddies and powerful current effects can be found, particularly on large-volume rivers. scouting is advisable for inexperienced parties. Injuries while swimming are rare; self-rescue is usually easy but group assistance may be required to avoid long swims. Rapids that are at the lower or upper end of this difficulty range are designated Class III- or Class III+ respectively.
